History of Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty celebrated its 100th birthday on 28 October 1986. The creation and establishment of the statue was a joint collaboration between America and France. Bartholdi decided to build a monument in America to celebrate its independence; due to the weak financial conditions of both France and America, it was decided that America would provide the statue's pedestal and France would be responsible for constructing the main statue. Bartholdi made the head and the hands of the statue holding a torch first; these pieces were displayed at various exhibitions for publicity. Numerous fundraising events were also carried out to arrange more funds for the creation of the pedestal and the rest of the statue. Finally, in 1886, the statue was completed and displayed.
Design of the Statue
The Statue of Liberty consists of a female figurine in robes, holding a torch in her hands; it is symbolic of the Roman goddess of freedom "Libertas." The statue has also borne a tablet that is known as "Tabula Ansata" and the date of the American declaration of Independence is engraved on this tablet. A broken chain can also be seen lying at the feet of the figurine, which is a sign of independence.
