Souvenirs from Tunisia

Tunisian souvenirs are varied and beautiful, mirroring the culture and environment. Stall after stall in the markets are brimming with handicrafts for the lucky tourist to purchase. Zerbias, also called carpets, are available in a variety of styles, called kilims, hamma and mergoums, and can be used as wall hangings or as a floor accent. Elegant bird cages are another practical and beautiful piece, even if you only own a fish, and can display a brightly painted ceramic vase. Hammered copper items, such as trays, teas sets, and bowls, will lend an exotic flair to a kitchen or dining room table. If you are looking for something more practical and personal, a pair of embroidered slippers, or a leather bag, belt or wallet will be a welcome addition to your wardrobe. Souvenirs from Tunisia can also be as simple as a colorful key chain or a picture refrigerator magnet of a local landmark.

The Cuisine of the Tunisian Republic

The food of Tunisia is a medley of the peoples who have lived, loved and died in its borders. This mix of African and Mediterranean spices and techniques results in a spicy, hearty fare, capable of satisfying all appetites. The main ingredients tend towards lamb, seafood, olive oil, tomatoes and spices, baked in the pots and pans of the nomadic tribes. Possibly the most iconic dish, the tagine, is named for the pot that is used to cook it in. Stuffed vegetables, roasted over a fire, are another delicious recipe, packed with rice and meat and served as a main meal. Condiments play a vital role in Tunisian cooking, including the spicy harrisa. A combination of chili pepper, tomato, coriander, cumin, garlic and olive oil, this sauce is made by the lady of the house. It is believed that the amount of spice used in the dish reflects the amount of love that she has for her husband.
