Souvenirs from Kenya

The Republic of Kenya offers handcrafted memorabilia to its visitors, such as bracelets made from tribal beads and sisal baskets in all sizes. Other native Kenyan souvenirs are carved wooden animal statues, and soapstone decorative items. Batik fabrics, made from applying wax to fabric before dying it, can be custom ordered in your favorite color, and turned into curtains, wall hangings and bed spread. Wax paintings, created in a similar fashion, are also sought out by visitors. Makonde statues are other popular souvenirs from Kenya. Carved from dark Mahogany wood, they are stylized portraits of people, but be careful when selecting one. Avoid those that are lightweight, as they may just be cheaper wood that has been dyed with shoe polish. Those seeking more martial souvenirs from Kenya maybe interested in picking up tribal spears and drums to accent their homes, in addition to costumes, jewelry and masks that reflect an exotic state of mind.

A Kenyan Photo Safari

Kenyan visitors often go on photo safaris through the national parks and wildlife reserves. Photo safaris have largely replaced the hunting safaris of times past, as laws were enacted to help protect endangered species. Zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, lions, cheetahs and elephants are just a few of the animals you can take pictures of in their natural habitat. Lake Nakuru National Park is home to thousands of flamingos, who mass on the shallow lake and feed on algae. Interested in something a bit wilder? Nairobi National Park was the first park of Kenya, and is home to a successful rhinoceros sanctuary. Also of interest is the Mount Kenya National Park, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Here, you can view herds of African buffalo and the black and white Colobus monkey. Getting close to these majestic African animals is a dream for many people, and a once in a lifetime experience to be cherished.
