Dressed up for a Social Gathering
This souvenir from Antarctica presents a penguin that looks dressed up for a special social gathering. We can even picture him having some drinks in his kind of tuxedo while the temperatures go down and the cold wind moves his short hair. Actually, penguins Adelie frequently walk along the coasts of Antarctica looking for food, or during breeding season. It is no wonder that this picture shows the penguin in motion. The name of Adelie was given by explorer Jules Dumont D Urville honoring his wife and also confronting the kind of macho pose of the penguins who extend their necks as they walk.
And, Yes, they are Social
These penguins are very social and they live in large communities. Scientists have identified 38 colonies where more than five millions penguins, a number similar to the population of a country of the European Union, live and this is just in the Sea of Ross. They love swimming and they take advantage opportunity to dive in the sea. They live on a a very nutritive diet based on krill and fish. Upon breeding season, they leave the icebergs where they love to spend Winter and go to the inland where females lay two eggs that both parents incubate for about a month. The newborns live in the nest for another month and they are allowed to go out to sea two months later. Adelie penguins look funny when they walk as they sway their bodies and from time they call throwing their head back, as if they were British gentlemen. This is great travel souvenir specially if there kids back home.
