Portland Oregon's Beautiful Lan Su Chinese Gardens are the Feature of This Souvenir Fridge Magnet
Also known as the "Garden of Awakening Orchids," the Lan Su Chinese Gardens are a treasure from Portland, Oregon's largest city. As you can see on the image from the fridge magnet, the tranquil gardens are constructed in a traditional Chinese style, similar to ones from classical gardens of the ancient coastal city of Suzhou. This is due to the sister-city status of Portland and Suzhou; construction of the gardens began in 1999 and included the importation of five hundred tons of rocks - especially the craggy "Scholar's Rocks" popular in garden design. All of the gardens plants are from species native to China, but come from private gardens within Oregon - meaning that some are over a hundred years old. The image in the magnet comes from the pool outside the gardens' tea rooms.
Portland is the "City of Roses" and Home to Many Lovely Gardens
The Lan Su garden has quickly risen to prominence in Portland, but it is far from the only garden in the city. Portland has long been known as the "City of Roses," and the city's climate is ideal for growing the famous flowers. The city is home to the International Rose Test Garden, a city institution where roses are sent from all over the world to be tested for their color, fragrance and other attributes. The city also hosts the Portland Rose Festival every year and has planted numerous rose bushes along city streets. Even the city arena, home to the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team, is known as the "Rose Garden." Beyond roses, the city also has a large number of parks and gardens, including the Portland Japanese Garden in Washington Park.
