The Spoonbridge with Cherry - An Icon at Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

The Spoonbridge and Cherry is an artwork of spoon with a large cherry. This artwork is an icon in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in the United States. This artwork was designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. The construction began in 1985 and took 4 long years to complete. Aluminum, stainless steel and paint were used to make this Spoonbridge. The Spoonbridge is approximately 52 feet tall, 29 feet long and 162 inch wide. The spoon weighs about 6000 pounds and the cherry is about 1200 pounds. The items were shaped in a shipbuilding yard in New England. A fine stream of water, flows over from the base, and makes the aluminum cherry gleam in light. A second stream sprays from the top of the stem of the cherry into the pool below. The Spoonbridge and Cherry looks absolutely different when snow and ice accumulate on it during the winter season. This acrylic fridge magnet souvenir with its picture of the Spoonbridge and Cherry is an excellent memento of the work of art that will keep you remembering the days of your touring Minneapolis.

About The Artists Who Created Spoonbridge with Cherry

In 1929, Claes Oldenburg was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He trained himself from Yale University and the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1956, he headed for New York. Oldenburg created plaster carvings of food and eventually monumental soft sculptures. He took his subject matter for painting mainly from daily life or popular culture. In 1976, he met Coosje van Bruggen. Coosje was thirteen years younger to Oldenburg. Her first collaboration with Claes was, when his sculpture Towel 1 was placed in Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands. Their marriage took place in 1977. As husband and wife they have executed more than 40 sculptures.
