Cape Neddick Lighthouse In Maine Pictured On A Colourful Acrylic Fridge Magnet
Keeping the ships safe from the rocks Cape Neddick lighthouse has been standing in the same position, on Nubble Island off Cape Neddick Point, since it was built in 1879. The structure itself is forty one feet in height but the light stands eighty eight feet above sea level due to the rocky mass on which the lighthouse is built. Although the lighthouse is inaccessible to visitors it is still a popular landmark and in Sohier Park, on the mainland nearby, there is a telescope through which the building can be viewed, and a gift shop. The bright blue sky and water make a perfect backdrop to the Cape Neddick Lighthouse in Maine as pictured on this attractive acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.
The Stories Of Cape Neddick Lighthouse In Maine
One story of Cape Neddick Lighthouse which is yet to be told is the origin of the little brass replicas of the lighthouse which adorn the stanchions on the walkway around the light. There are some stories of the lighthouse, and its inhabitants, which have been told over the years though. Apparently in 1912 the keeper of the light, and his wife, developed a business giving tours of the island to eager visitors, an enterprise which led to the keeper being fired as he was neglecting his duties with the light. Another tale from Cape Neddick Lighthouse is that of the keeper who lived there with his nineteen pound cat which is said to have swum across the channel to the mainland.
