The House Of Abraham Lincoln In Springfield, Illinois Captured On A Colourful Acrylic Fridge Magnet

Abraham Lincoln was the Sixteenth President of the United States of America. The house pictured on this attractive acrylic fridge magnet, from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts, was purchased by Lincoln and his wife Mary in 1844. The house did not look this way when first purchased; it was a single storey white building with green shutters. The Lincolns extended the premises as their family grew. Three of the four Lincoln sons were born in the house and one of the boys, Edward, died there in 1950. Neither Abraham nor Mary was interested in gardening and they kept a garden for only one year of the time they lived in the building. In 1861 the Lincolns left the house and rented it out. In 1887 their son Robert Todd Lincoln gave the house to the state on the understanding that it should be maintained and remain open to the public free of charge. The house is preserved in its historic state to this day as are the buildings in the four blocks surrounding the house.

The Life Of Abraham Lincoln, Former President Of The United States Of America

Born to a poor family, and self-taught, Abraham Lincoln was a country lawyer prior to his election as President. As the Sixteenth President of the United States of America, a role to which he was elected in 1861, Lincoln led the country through one of the most turbulent times of its history, The American Civil War. He maintained the Union, improved the economy and abolished slavery. Lincoln was President until 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth whilst attending Ford's Theatre. Abraham Lincoln lived in Springfield Illinois prior to becoming President, at the house pictured on our lovely acrylic fridge magnet.
