Beautiful Picture of Historic Re-enactment at a Florida Fortress

This spectacular photograph of firing a canyon from atop the stone walls of Castillo de San Marcos is depicted on a Worldwide Gifts refrigerator magnet in order to capture a special keepsake image for your souvenir from Florida. This splendid fortress was constructed from coquina shell stones by Spanish soldiers over a period of twenty-three years beginning in 1672. Queen Mariana of Spain authorized its construction to protect the settlement from English invasion, and the fort was never conquered.

The Castillo de San Marcos has stood proudly on the Matanzas Bay for almost a quarter century, and has been passed back and forth between the Spanish, British and Americans until Florida became a territory of the United States.

Today the Castillo de San Marcos is listed as a National Historical Monument, and is one of the most visited attractions for tourists to historic St. Augustine.

More Interesting Historic Attractions in St. Augustine

As the oldest city in America, St. Augustine has quite a few intriguing historical landmarks that visitors enjoy touring. The St. Augustine Historic District begins at the Old City Gates at St. George Street, where you can see sites such as the Oldest House, the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse and many old Spanish Colonial style homes and shops. The Plaza de la Constitucion is the oldest public park in the United States, and you'll also want to be sure and visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine which faces the Plaza.

Some more notable sites that shouldn't be missed when visiting historic St. Augustine include the St. Augustine Lighthouse, which is famous for its ghost stories. The first settlement for free blacks was located in St. Augustine, and so is the famous "Fountain of Youth."
