History of Bahia Honda Bridge
The bridge was built in 1912 by Henry Flagger, the famous American industrialist who founded Standard Oil. Formerly it was just a portion of Overseas Railway but the state of Florida bought it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. The transaction was done in order to use the bridge to encourage automobile movement in that area. Thus, in 1938, it was introduced as a part of the Overseas Highways. The bridge was reintroduced in 1972 after a few changes to it. Two layers of the bridge were detached in order to accommodate boat traffic. The rest of the bridge is still used for automobile transport.
Structural Design of Bahia Honda Bridge
When the bridge was constructed in 1912, William Krome and Joseph Meredith designed it. It only offered a single track that linked Bahia Honda Key to Spanish Harbor Key. It was a steel bind construction and it was the longest bridge in the United States. In 1938, B.M. Duncan redesigned the structure. A very smart approach was used to cut costs. Instead of constructing the entire bridge again to make it vehicular, a road deck as added to it to allow automobile transport. Until this date, it is one of the largest deck-truss bridges in the country.
