One of the most important cathedrals in the United States is located in St. Augustine, Florida. The Catholic Bishop of St. Augustine also sits in this cathedral and it was named U.S. National Historic Landmark by the U.S. government in the year 1970. History of the Cathedral Basilica in St Augustine

The Spanish settlers, who moved to St. Augustine from the Caribbean initially, built the cathedral in 1560s. The architecture of this church was very simple at that time. The Spanish people rebuilt it many times in order to improve the cathedral. The architecture of the building also improved with the passage of time. However, it was not until 1793 that the final structure of the cathedral was planned. The construction took five years to complete.
