The Mark Twain House In Hartford, Connecticut Pictured On An Attractive Acrylic Fridge Magnet

Samuel L. Clemens, known the world over as Mark Twain lived in his home in Hartford, Connecticut from 1874 to 1891. His wife Livy was heavily involved in the design of the house and drew sketches prior to the commencement of its construction in 1873. The family were happy living there, with Samuel playing games with the children in the conservatory, pretending to be an elephant in imaginary safaris. As Mark Twain he also competed many of his most successful works whilst living at the house such as 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer', 'Huckleberry Finn', and 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court'. The house was designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter an architect from New York City; it is in the Victorian Gothic Revival style. At the time the Hartford Daily Times wrote that it would be '...a house of note for a long time to come'. From the picture on this colourful acrylic fridge magnet, from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts, it can be seen that this was correct.

The Life Of The Mark Twain House In Hartford, Connecticut

The attractive Mark Twain house in Hartford, Connecticut was designed and built under the instruction of the writer and his wife. It provided an ideal family home with rooms such as a billiards room, study and a separate area for the children where they could be schooled and play. It was also in a perfect area with New Haven being home to a dozen publishers at the time, as well as many writers; Harriet Beecher Stowe lived next door. In 1881, following the success of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' the house was renovated. But the happy life at the house eventually ended in 1891 when financial difficulties forced the family to move to Europe where it was cheaper to live. Today restoration and preservation have restored the house to how it was when the family lived there. As can be seen from the picture on our acrylic fridge magnet it is a truly memorable building.
