Yale University Central Campus Featured On An Attractive Acrylic Fridge Magnet
The central campus of Yale University in Connecticut is situated in downtown New Haven. Although there are several modern buildings which form part of the campus Yale is known for the mainly collegiate gothic architecture of its buildings. The University also owns many of the mansions on Hillhouse Avenue, a road which was described by both Charles Dickens and Mark Twain as 'the most beautiful street in America'. These nineteenth century buildings have been restored by Yale. The Oldest building on the campus is Connecticut Hall which was built in the Georgian style in 1752; it is also one of the oldest buildings in Connecticut. The photograph on this acrylic fridge magnet, from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts, features Harkness Tower.
Harkness Tower On The Central Campus Of Yale University In Connecticut
Harkness Tower is in the familiar collegiate gothic style of many Yale University buildings. It was built between 1917 and 1921 as part of the Memorial Quadrangle. This area was donated to the University by Anna M Harkness in honour of her son Charles who graduated from the University in 1883 and later died. The tower houses the Yale Memorial Carillon. A carillon is an instrument which is typically in a bell tower and consists of at least twenty three bells; there are fifty four bells in the Yale Memorial Carillon. Harkness Tower was designed by James Gamble Rogers who also designed many of the other gothic structures at the university. He said that he gained inspiration for the design from Boston Stump which is the tower of the parish church of St Botolph in Boston, England. Whatever his inspiration the picture on our attractive acrylic fridge magnet shows how visually stunning the outcome is.
