The History And Nature Of Convict Lake In California
The history of Convict Lake is not quite as tranquil as the area is today. Its name comes from an event which took place towards the end of the nineteenth century. On 17 September 1871 a group of convicts escaped from jail in Carson City. Sheriff George Hightower caught up with them at what is now Convict Creek and a shoot-out took place. Robert Morrison and Mono Jim, who were part of the posse, were killed in the encounter and the prisoners escaped, only to be captured later in Round Valley. As a result of this event the creek and lake were given the name Convict and the peaks above the lake were named Mount Morrison and Mono Jim. This history is now just that and picnics and boat trips have replaced shoot outs. Visitors are also joined by local wildlife such as pine marten and mule deer. The now tranquil area of Convict Lake is pictured on our attractive acrylic fridge magnet.
