All about the Moose in Alaska

The moose is the largest species of deer and it inhabits temperate and sub-arctic climate zones. As such, the boreal and mixed deciduous forests of Alaska are the natural home to this wonder animal, which is characterized by the palmate antlers in the males. Apart from Alaska, you also get to see the moose in Canada, Russia and Scandinavia. The moose formerly occupied a vast area of landmass but increased poaching and other human activities have turned them into a rare extant deer species. The forests and lakes of Alaska contain the terrestrial and aquatic vegetation that the moose feed upon. Normally, the moose is a very gentle and sedentary animal, but if you want to catch them in action, visit Alaska in autumn to witness the spectacular mating fights between the males. The acrylic fridge magnet gives you a close-up of the Alaskan moose that will remind you about this slow-moving animal even when you are not in Alaska.

Some More Interesting Information about Moose

Although the moose is a rather large and heavy kind of deer, they can be really fast when angry or startled. They can run fast up to 56 km an hour and while trotting slowly, can cover up to 32 km per hour at one go. The moose generally inhabit tall grassy lands to hide their bodies. They have a peculiar long face with muzzles at the end of their chins. You can see a fold of skin called a bell hanging under a moose' throat.

If you are visiting Alaska during the ice-thawing season, you can watch the moose paddling in the water. During the winters, they are found eating pinecones, shrubs, mosses and lichens from under the surface of the snow. The moose have a particular hype of hooves with which they can support their huge bodies on the snow.
