French Souvenir: Resin Fridge Magnet of Camargue

The Camargue, also known as Camargo or Camarga is an area situated towards the south of Arles in France and lies in the middle of the branches of the delta of River Rhone and the Mediterranean Sea. Camargue is a wetland that was declared to have 'international value and importance' on 1st December, 1986. If you are seeking for a fitting souvenir of this wetland, then look no further. The pretty resin fridge magnet showing horses running across the wetland in the Camargue region is indeed an apt keepsake of the area. You can get this magnet from

Geography of the Wetland

Camargue is spread over a big area of more than 930km2; it is the largest river delta in the entire Western Europe. It is quite a huge plain that consists of enormous brine ponds that are cut-off from the sea by huge sandbars and marshes engulfed in the reeds. Almost one third of the Camargue region is either covered in swamps or consists of lakes. The middle area close to the shore of the huge Etang de Vaccares (brine lagoon) has been converted into a regional park since 1927; during 2008, it was made part of the bigger Parc naturel regional de Camargue (Regional Park of Camargue).

Fauna and Flora Found in Camargue

Over 400 kinds of birds live in the Camargue; the brine lagoons provide an excellent habitat for the famous greater flamingos. The marshlands have a favorable environment for different types of insects. The region is also well known for its special breed of horse and bull known as the Camargue Horse and Camargue Bull respectively. Camargue has a big variety of flora; some of its famous plants are sea lavender, glasswort and tamarisks; these plants thrive well in the salt-water lakes.
