Court of the Lions in Alhambra

Alhambra is also at times referred to as 'Calat Alhambra'; it is an amalgamation of a palace and a fortress and was established in 889 to serve as a fortress but was transformed into an extravagant palace by Yusuf I, the famous Sultan of Granada during 1333. The popular 'court of the lions' is the most important court of the Palace of the Lions located in the middle of Alhambra. Its establishment commenced during 1362 AD and was completed in 1391 AD. It is also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; and was minted on the 2EUR limited edition coins that were released in Spain during 2011.

Description of the Court

The court of the lions is an oblong shaped court that measures 35 meters by 20 meters; it is surrounded on its sides by a lovely gallery that is held up by 124 columns made of white marble. Pavilions are built on all the boundaries of the court with a dome shaped roof that is beautifully decorated. In the heart of the court, there is a magnificent fountain adorned with statues of 12 lions which is why the court is known as the court of lions.
