Medina Azahara

Imagine the times when the Arabs ruled Spain, they were in Europe and they loved it, they admired the landscape and the sense of power that it created. It was no wonder that Abderraman III had a new city built near Cordoba which he called Medina Azahara, what translates as the brilliant city. The city was thought to replicate the domineering position of the Arabs, thus it was located on the top having the seemingly never ending plain at its foot. Even the interior of this city resembled the complicated social structure among its inhabitants, the palace is on the very top of the Morena Mountains, and the remaining buildings such as the House of the Visires, the guards quarters, the Rico Saloon, the gardens and the administrative offices, are on the slope until the traveler gets to the plain where the ordinary people lived. Due to the irregular geography, the construction demanded a complicated system of roads and an efficient hydraulic structure that provided fresh water to all the city. By all means, this is a great travel souvenir to take back home.
