Fridge Magnet Depiction of Medina Azahara in Cordoba, Spain

Cordoba is a city located in Andalusia in the southern region of Spain. It was once inhabited by the Muslims and was governed by Caliphs. Due to this, it has several interesting buildings that are great examples of Arabic architecture. One of the fascinating highlights is the 'Medina Azahara' which is a town situated on the western periphery of Cordoba. Tourists, especially those who are architecture and religion enthusiasts love visiting this town. You can get a fragment of this town too, but in the shape of a resin fridge magnet. It is undoubtedly a great souvenir of the town and will forever be reminiscent of your time spent there.

Medina Azahara- The Beautiful Town

The name Medina Azahara is from the Arabic language and it means 'beautiful town' or 'brilliant town.' It is a palace-city that was established by Abd-ar-Rahman III al-Nasir who was the Ummayad Caliph of Cordoba from 012 till 961. Medina Azahara served as the capital of al-Andalus which was also known as the 'Muslim Spain' during that time. It was the hub of all administrative and political activities that used to take place in Andalus at that time. The construction of the city began during 936 and was completed in 940. It comprised of gorgeous ceremonial halls, brilliant mosques, beautiful gardens, offices, workshops, residencies, one mint and several public baths.

More about the Town

Medina Azahara was mainly established to serve as a symbol of the Caliph's power. It was a ritual amongst the Arab Caliphs to build a new town to represent of his dignity, strength and authority which is why Abd-ar-Rahman III al-Nasir gave orders to construct Medina Azahara. The town was destroyed during a civil war and was reduced to rubble. Later in 1910, the ruins of Medina Azahara were excavated and many of its original buildings were restored.
