Travel Souvenir Depicting One of the Most Beautiful Sights in France

Le Mont Saint Michel is a breathtaking historical site that has been called a Wonder of the Western World, and shown here on this Worldwide Gifts souvenir plate it is a very special and memorable souvenir from France. Thousands of international tourists make the trip to this outlying region of Normandy in order to make a pilgrimage to a holy spot famous for its sightings of the Archangel Michael.

The church that was constructed here was created in order to consecrate the land where the angel visited on three separate occasions in the Middle Ages. Building of the magnificent cathedral began in the year 709 on a small piece of land in the Bay of Saint Michel that is barely connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus that becomes covered with water during the highest point of the incoming tides. Restoration works are in order to protect the spectacular church from damage by the vagaries of the unusual tidewaters of the bay.

The History of Le Mont Saint Michel

Today Le Mont Saint Michel is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site that is visited by thousands of tourists and those who wish to pray and make a pilgrimage to the holy spot where the angel was seen. Over the centuries it has been an important cathedral, and was a prison for many years. Today it is a monastic community that continues to be a significant spiritual center for the Roman Catholic church.

The Grevin Museum is located in the Saint Michel Abbey and exhibits a detailed history of this notable French religious and historic site. Modern day pilgrims have the opportunity to learn about those pilgrims who came here in the Middle Ages, and to walk in the footsteps of medieval monks, Crusaders and the locals who lived here so long ago.l
