An Instrument of Imagination
If you became enamored with the rich and traditional dance culture that permeates so much of Spanish society, you may find that this magnet souvenir from Spain is just right for you. Every time you see it, you may be reminded that there is a larger world out there beyond what we see in our daily lives and that sometimes it pays to open ourselves up to them. It may also appeal to you if you like figurines or decorating the things around your home with cute accessories.
One very nice thing about this souvenir is that although it features a dancer in a very particular dancing position, her dress appears disproportionately large giving her a bit of an unrealistic quality that allows you to take her in as an instrument of imagination and contemplation.
It's All about Flamenco
Flamenco is a whole performance act that dates from the Eighteenth century when it was played by Gitanos who have been living in the Iberian peninsula for centuries. It includes guitar playing, singing and dancing, the three are very distinctive in a way that you won't find in any other folk expression around the world. Nowadays, there are different styles of Flamenco which are influenced by the cultural backgrounds of the players and where it is performed. Roughly, three styles can be differentiated. Flamenco pure is the one linked to its origins and to the way Gitanos played it, which involved dancing soloists. The most popular Flamenco among ballet companies is Classical Flamenco, it is clearly identifiable because the performers dance in an upright position and with their arms extended. Flamenco Nuevo is more recent and has received influences from other styles. All in all, this is a great travel souvenir to take back home.
