Carcassonne - A Medieval Sojourn

Carcassonne is a French city, where the Aude River divides it into La Cite and The Ville Basse. La Cite located on the top of a hill is a fortified city overlooking The Ville Basse meaning the Lower Town. In fact, La Cite was where the 1991 movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" was shot. But this is not its only claim to fame; Carcassonne is almost 2000 years old and has a strong connection to the Medieval Ages. Known as the "greatest fortress city of Europe", the Middle Ages saw it withstanding many assaults. Carcassonne is mainly known by La Cite - an older city than The Ville Basse which was established in the 13th century. Even today the cobblestoned pathway, souvenir shops decked in medieval goods and the classic peasant stew Cassoullet - a staple at most cafes evoke the ages of yore. This metal fridge magnet souvenir brings with it the magic and mystery of the middle ages that were such a rich storehouse of the European history.

The Main Attractions of Carcassonne

Your visit to Carcassonne would be incomplete without a detailed tour of La Cite; the number of attractions may not be too many but they all worth merit. The castle and rampart of La Cite is a must visit, it also has a museum detailing the history of Carcassone. If you have admired the stained glass that adorns many churches then make a point to visit The Basilica of Saint Nazaire located in Place de l'Eglise. For the more adventurous of spirit, Pech Mary should be the must pit stop. It contains the world's largest collection of birds of prey that are trained to fly freely but to duly return to the falconers when called. If you would like to explore further, then there is a slightly out of the city attraction - Rennes le Chateau that traces its connection right to the Holy Grail and is rumored to have sheltered Mary Magdalene.
