Sevilla the Cultural Capital of Spain

The enduring imagery of Seville, of romance and intrigue, conquests and chivalry has been perfectly captured in this metal fridge magnet souvenir. Sevilla has many things to its credit, it is the 4th largest city in Spain, it was the capital of Muslim Spain, the chief city of Andalusian region and was the epicenter of the Spanish venture into the New World. There are so many things to know and to see in this historic city and it has a relation to many important events. Culturally it has always been active and flourishing with artists, sculptors, poets having made their name here. In fact, it gave birth to a distinct school of art known as the Spanish Baroque of which Diego Velazquez, Francisco de Zurbaran, Francisco Pacheco del Rio, Bartolome Esteban Murillo and Juan Martinez Montanes have been active members. The city museum has a spectacular collection of these masters.

More Facts about Sevilla

Sevilla has been under the Moorish rule for some time and its impact was felt mostly in architecture, the finest specimen of which is the Alcazar Palace. It is interesting to see a fine amalgamation of Moorish as well as Gothic architectural features. That is because though the construction of the palace was commenced by the Almohads it was completed under the rule of the Christians. Apart from this, Sevilla has many churches many of them converted from Moorish mosques and they clearly show the Renaissance, Rococo and Baroque styles of architecture. Sevilla is also an integral part of the Bullfighting passion that rides high in Spain. In fact, the Sevilla Bullring is amongst the oldest and the biggest ones in Spain.
