Your German Kind of Clock

If you want something uniquely German, you can't go wrong with a magnet of a big cuckoo clock. It is just such a traditional reminder of the Germany of old days. Many people in Germany have these in their homes to maintain a theme of national culture and you can get this one to bring that notion into your own kitchen. The clock depicted in this particular piece is quite charming as it features a number of kind and positive elements that are sure to help brighten up your mornings. This souvenir from Germany includes beautiful flowers, a jolly gnome person and gold colored weights.

The History of the Cuckoo Clock

The Cuckoo clock comes from the Black Forest and it is said to have been created for the first time in the early Eighteenth hundreds when a creative clockmaker got this model made. As early as 1629, Philipp Hainhofer described a clock featuring a mechanism that resembled that of the Cuckoo clock. But the fact is that there are many legends as to who produced the first cuckoo clock. According to priest Markus Fidelis Jack, it was Franz Anton Ketterer, while R. Dorer questions not only Ketterer's authorship but also the fact that it was a Black Forest creation. However, the Cuckoo clock has been traditionally geographically located in this German region.

Today, they are one of the most popular kinds of clocks and they are, definitely, the collectors' favorites. When purchasing one you need to make some decisions: do you prefer a mechanical one or you prefer to wind it by hand, do you like a Black Forest or a Swiss Chalet? It is also common to find some other designs which have modernized the traditional models. If you are planning to take something truly German back home, this travel souvenir will make a great gift.
