A Brief Overview of Seattle
Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States with a metropolitan population of over 4 million. Located on a narrow isthmus that snakes between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle is a major port city with direct access to the Pacific Ocean. The beautiful snowcapped peaks of the both the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range loom over Seattle's skyline and are some of its most distinctive geographic features. The stratovolcano Mount Rainier is clearly visible from Seattle; it is considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of its proximity to populous Seattle area. Seattle is also well known as the home of Microsoft, Boeing, and Starbucks Coffee. It is also renowned for its music scene and as the birthplace of grunge rock, made popular by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. While Seattle receives quite a bit of rainfall during the winter, in the summer it is famous for its consistently blue skies and mild temperatures. Perhaps the most definitive feature of its skyline is the Space Needle, a 184 meter tall tower overlooking the downtown area.
