Pierre, South Dakota: On the River, On the Move
Pierre is the capital of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County. Situated on the famous Missouri River, Pierre's population is just over 13,000, which makes it the second smallest state capital in the United States after Montpelier, Vermont. Pierre has been the capital of the South Dakota since it gained statehood on November 11, 1889, and it was selected to serve this role because of its central location within the state. Just outside the city's boundaries you'll find Lake Oahe, one of the largest man-made bodies of water in the world and a great spot for fishing. Pierre's geographical location east of the Rocky Mountains and far away from any large bodies of water means that it is relatively dry there year round, and that it has long, cold winters and hot summers, with very short spring and autumn transitions between the two. The lack of precipitation means, however, that Pierre gets a lot of sunshine year-round!
