Show Your California Pride with a Fridge Magnet of the Seal of California
You will always remember this great state when you purchase the acrylic fridge magnet depicting the interesting and colorful Seal of California. The Great Seal of the State of California was officially adopted in 1849, and has only had a few minor changes since then. The seal depicts the Roman goddess Minerva (or Athena, for those of you who are more familiar with Greek mythology), the goddess of wisdom and war. In front of Minerva's shield walks a California grizzly bear, which is the official state animal. The grizzly bear is eating grape vines, which represent California's ample production of wine. The seal also has a sheaf of grain which represents agriculture, a miner, which represents the California Gold Rush and the mining industry, and four sailing ships, which represent California's economic power. The phrase "Eureka" is California's state motto, and means "I have found it!" U.S. Army Major Robert S. Garnett designed the original seal. Garnett later had the unfortunate distinction of being the first general killed in the American Civil War; he served as a Confederate general.
Geography of the Seal of California
As you can see, the background of the seal depicts a lovely mountainous and water-filled landscape. There is some controversy as to which body of water and mountain range this actually depicts. In 1849, the waters were described as being "of the Sacramento" and the mountains in the background as being "the snow-clad peaks of the Sierra Nevada". Yet other early descriptions of the seal state that the body of water is the San Francisco Bay. To add to the confusion, others have stated that the mountain is actually Mount Diablo. Regardless, it is a beautiful seal!
