A Bright and Shining Reminder: The Ka Hae Hawaii Souvenir Magnet
Put this boldly colored graphic print fridge magnet up in your kitchen and keep your Hawaiian memento in plain sight every day. You can see the pride in the strong lines of the design, and appreciate the patriotism of a state flag that has represented the beautiful Pacific island state since 1845. The Ka Hae Hawaii (Hawaii State Flag) has the unique designation of being the only American flag to still represent Great Britain by including the Union Jack in the flag's design.
The upper left quarter of the Hawaii State Flag is a scaled-down image of the flag of the United Kingdom. The colors of the red, white and blue Union Jack are repeated in the eight horizontal stripes that cover the remainder of the flag. The stripes are laid in a repeating pattern of white, red, blue, white, red, blue, white, red.
An Interesting History Explaining the Blended Symbols of Two Countries
It was no accident that the British flag holds such a prominent position on the flag for the state of Hawaii, considering that for a considerable length of time the British had a great deal of influence on what was then the Kingdom of Hawaii. There is a story that relates how King Kamehameha flew a British flag given to him by English explorer, Captain George Vancouver, over his home as a symbol of friendship with King George III, and then later flew an American flag overhead to appease the United States during the War of 1812. In 1816 the king decided to create his own flag and made a hybrid flag that would allow him to remain friendly with both countries. The eight horizontal stripes on the flag represent the eight main islands of Hawaii.
