History of Old Square
Old Square was created in sometime during 1559 and was known as Plaza Nueva in the start as it was new at that time. It was basically established to serve as a substitute of Plaza de Armas which was the main military and government center in Havana in those days. Plaza Nueva was transformed into a big marketplace during the 18th century and its name was then changed to Plaza Del Mercado which means "market square." A lot of laborers and architects were involved in creating this plaza; and significant time and effort went into establishing this gorgeous square.
