The Himeji Castle was created on the site of a fortress and consist of around 38 buildings that were added over the years. Donjon is one the eminent buildings of the castle complex and consists of six levels that rise from a huge foundation made of stone. It is linked with three small towers by corridors. The central compound of the castle is known as Hommaru and consists of several gates, lots of fortified walls and smaller towers that protect the castle from attackers and invaders. The inner compound of the Himeji Castle is called "Ninnomaru" and has a vast moat surrounding it that adds more protection to it.
