Sforza or Sforzesco Castle is a spectacular castle in Milan and can be seen on this acrylic fridge magnet. It is one of the most significant monuments of Milan and is also amongst the top-notch tourist attractions of this city. This castle has three inner courtyards and several towers. Many museums are also housed in Castle Sforzesco.
History of Sforza Castle
Galeazzo Il Visconti commissioned the establishment of a fortress in 1358; the fortress was finished after one year in 1368. Its basic structure consisted of 4 walls and a tower at every corner of the castle. The fortress was expanded by the successors of Il Visconti: Gian Galeazzo and Filippo Maria. They converted this fortress into a huge castle. Later when Francesco Sforza came into power, he took hold of this fortress and named it after himself. Thus, the fortress was named "Sforza Castle." This castle was in a terrible condition during the time Milan was ruled by foreigners.
Architect Luca Beltrami made major restoration of the castle in 1900 and saved it from further devastation; the castle was then open to the public; but the renovation project was eventually completed in 1905.
Architecture of Sforza Castle
The current castle is in the shape of an enormous square; it has 3 inner courtyards and several towers. Four big towers are constructed at the four corners of the castles; Torre del Filatere is the tallest tower and leads the way to the entrance of the castle. The heart of Sforza Castle lies behind Torre di Bona di Savoia - one of the towers in this castle. There are gorgeous gardens and arcades in this castle that are designed by famous artists.
