The Beautiful City Of Vienna, Austria, Pictured On An Acrylic Fridge Magnet
The capital of Austria, Vienna is a fascinating city. Historically there is evidence that people have been living in the area since 500 BC, when Celts settled by the Danube River. In Roman times the city (then known as Vindobona ) was fortified against Germanic tribes. Over the years the city has maintained close ties with the Celts. These links can be seen in Schottenstift monastery, home to many Irish monks in history.
Later in history Vienna became the capital of the Austrian Empire. It was an influential city across Europe and hosted the Congress of Vienna in 1814. The city saw dramatic expansion during the late nineteenth century and after the First World War, in 1918, it became the capital of the Republic of German-Austria; then in 1919 of the First Republic of Austria.
Vienna was a centre of culture in the first half of the twentieth century including the architecture of Adolf Loos. Of course there are many examples of wonderful architecture in Vienna, one of which is pictured on this acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.
