Names of the City

Vienna is the English name of Wien and is derived from the name 'Vienna' which is basically of Italian origin. Other names of Vienna in different languages are driven from the word 'windo' which is of Celtic origin and means 'bright.' Some sources state that the name of the city comes from another word, 'Vedunia' which means 'forest stream', and this name later got converted into Wienne, Wien and Vienna. There are sources that assert that this name is actually borrowed from the Celtic name 'Vindobona' which means 'white land', and this name later became Wien and Videri which is the name of the city in Czech

Till the start of the twentieth century, Wien was the only city in the world to have the biggest German speaking population. It is known as the 'city of music' and the 'city of dreams' because of the scores of musicians the city has produced and because of the reason that Sigmund Freud- the first psychoanalyst of the world lived there respectively. The city contains plenty of wonderful tourist attractions and is also included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
