Canada's Coat of Arms: A Distinctly Canadian Emblem
Canada's coat of arms highlights the two main sources of the nation's heritage: its English and French colonial roots. It is divided into five sections; the top left section features three golden lions on a red field, a symbol of British royalty that has been used for centuries. The top right section depicts the red lion of Scottish royalty. The center left section shows the golden harp of Ireland on a blue field. Many of Canada's settlers came from Scotland and Ireland, which were part of Great Britain at the time (Scotland still is, of course). The center right section depicts three golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue field, which is an ancient symbol of French royalty. In the bottom section are three red maple leaves, signifying Canada as a distinct political and cultural entity produced out of its European roots. The maple leaf has long been a symbol of Canada, as reflected in the leaf featured prominently on the Canadian flag.
