It was inhabited by the Arawaks in the start and it is said that they arrived there in small boats from South America. The English made settlements on the island in 1632 and began tobacco and sugar farming there. Antigua was also occupied by the French in 1666, but the British soon regained control over it. The island became an independent country in 1981 and was officially known as Antigua and Barbuda.
