History of the Temple
Temple of the Tooth is also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is built inside the palace that is home to the relic of the tooth of Buddha. After Gautama Buddha's demise, the tooth relic was taken from him and smuggled to Sri Lanka during 313 AD.
Princess Hemamali and Prince Dantha took it on the orders of Hemamali's father, King Guhasiva. In Sri Lanka, the tooth was enshrined and kept inside a temple in Lankapattana and when the capital was changed to Kandy, the tooth relic was transferred to the new capital and placed in a temple, which was named "Temple of the Tooth."
Esala Perahera Festival
The tooth relic is taken out of the shrine once every year during Esala Perahera. It is a prominent Buddhist festival that is celebrated for ten days. In the festival, a royal male elephant carries the tooth relic on his back and it is followed by a huge parade of dancers. However, since 1990, the reliquary of the tooth is not taken out due to problems with Tamil Tigers.
