Lake Louise: Some Facts and Figures
Lake Louise is one of Banff’s most famous landmarks. It is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria of the British Empire. The Princess was married to the Marquess of Lorne, who served as Governor General of Canada for many years. Lake Louise is a glacial lake, and it owes its distinct emerald color to the fine rock flour carried into its waters by the melting glaciers that feed it. It is drained by the Bow River, which flows through Alberta and its largest city, Calgary, before eventually joining the Oldman River to form the South Saskatchewan River. Ultimately water from the lake reaches Hudson Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, thousands of kilometers away! Lake Louise is perhaps best known for the luxury railroad hotel located on its shores, the Chateau Lake Louise. Built in the early 20th Century, the hotel still hosts guests year round.
